Tanzania: Situation Report on Human Rights Defenders and Civic Space (2021)

In 2021, the Tanzanian Human Rights Defenders Coalition published its latest evaluation of the situation of human rights defenders (HRDs or defenders) in Tanzania. The report, which is part of a series updated every year, analyses the context in which human rights defenders operate.

The first chapter of the report includes a listing of international and national legal mechanisms, as well as non-legal mechanisms that may be used for the protection of human rights defenders in Tanzania. The second chapter includes an overview of challenges faced by human rights defenders, including violations committed against defenders such as strategic lawsuits and uninvestigated incidents committed against defenders in Tanzania. Chapter three zooms in on specific challenges faced by journalists, such as digital threats and security incidents. Chapter four includes a debrief of trainings carried out by the Coalition on protection, security and risk management and chapter five includes an analysis of civic space in Tanzania.

The report concludes with a list of recommendations for both human rights defenders and government authorities, suggesting concrete steps forward to improve the security of defenders in Tanzania.
