Guinea: Draft Law on the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights Defenders

In 2017, a draft law was developed by Guinean civil society actors. Together with global civil society actors such as the International Service for Human Rights, the draft law was improved in the course of roundtables and workshops with human rights defenders. The draft law identifies the rights of defenders and the State’s obligations towards defenders and the applicable sanctions, remedies for breaches of rights and obligations. It includes provisions for a specific protection for women defenders and disabled HRDs. In 2018, a report was submitted by the UN Human Rights Committee to the government of Guinea on the draft law with the aim to push for its adoption. Until now, no steps have been taken by the government towards this goal.
