Mexico, Guanajuato: Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists

On the 26th of October 2017, the government of the State of Guanajuato adopted the Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists in the State of Guanajuato. As formulated in Article 2 of the law, its purposes are:

  • The prevention of attacks and arbitrary interference in the exercise of journalism and the defence of human rights.
  • The protection of human rights defenders and journalists so that they can carry out their activities in a safe environment, free from attacks and harassment;
  • The cooperation and coordination that the State must have with the Federation and the municipalities to carry out prevention and protection actions.
  • Guarantee the technical, budgetary and human requirements for the application of this Law.

The application Law is guided by Regulation for the Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, issued two years later in 2019.
