Mexico: Decree enacting Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists

On the June 25th 2012, the Mexican congress adopted a decree enacting the Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists. As stated in the first article of the law:

“This Law is of public order, social interest and of general observance throughout the Republic and its purpose is to establish cooperation between the Federation and the Federal Entities to implement and operate the Prevention Measures, Preventive Measures and Urgent Protection Measures that guarantee the life, integrity, freedom and security of persons who are at risk as a consequence of the defense or promotion of human rights, and the exercise of freedom of expression and journalism.

This Law creates the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, in order for the State to fulfill its fundamental responsibility to protect, promote and guarantee human rights.”
