Guatemala: Civil society calls for the adoption of a public policy for human rights defenders

On the 17th of September 2020, several civil society organisations wrote a letter to the President of the Republic of Guatemala, calling for the adoption of a public policy for the protection of human rights defenders. The adoption of such a policy was ordered by the sentence of the court case Human Rights Defender and Others vs. Guatemala at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on the 28th of August, 2014. To date, the letter has remained without response.

The letter was written by Amnesty International, Centre for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), Frontline Defenders, Iniciativa Mesoamericana de Mujeres Defensoras de Derechos Humanos (IM-D) and Just Associates (JASS).
