Mexico: Agreement for the Recognition and Protection of Human Rights Defenders in Oaxaca

The Office of the Ombudsman for Human Rights of Oaxaca participates in updating the Agreement on the Recognition and Protection of Human Rights Defenders (or defenders) in Oaxaca, signed for the first time in November 2020: “We recognize the work of human rights defenders, who are subject to attacks, threats and harassment that prevent them from continuing their work.” (Office of the Ombudsman for Human Rights of Oaxaca).

The updated agreement reaffirms the importance of recognizing the work of defenders and strengthens alliances with national and municipal bodies, such as public security instances, academic institutions, civil society organisations and defenders. Since the signing of this agreement, efforts for the improved investigation of human rights violations against defenders have been evaluated and the institutions involved have confirmed their commitment to follow up on implemented strategies and the improvement of public policies on this issue.
