Uganda: Human Rights Defenders Protection Bill tabled in Parliament

In 2020, a protection bill for defenders has been proposed in the Ugandan Parliament. It provides for the recognition and protection of HRDs in Uganda, enhances partnership and collaboration between the government and HRDS and promotes compliance with international human rights standards and best practices. The draft bill has been developed based on the ISHR Model Law.

The following video explains the context of this bill, which resulted from a study from 2014, “The Legislative Climate for HRDs in Uganda.”, which emphasizes the importance of protective legislation for defenders. It explains how the draft bill came to be, how it was developed and by which actors.
