On October 15th the Paraguayan senate voted to postpone new discussions on the national Law on the Protection of Journalists and Human Rights Defenders. This came following the conservative party Colorado requesting a review of the draft bill’s contents.
A process which began in 2016, but has been stalled since 2023, national and international civil society are calling for the Senate to approve the current draft bill and build upon the need for a national law for the protection of journalists and human rights defenders.
On the ground, Paraguayan anti-corruption journalists in particular are experiencing increases in threats and attacks. Reporters without borders reported that from July to October 2025, at least four journalists investigating corruption, organised crime and political illegality have been targeted.
